Newark airport has been hit particularly bad with strikes and underinvestment and the delays there are cascading into other airports as well... after all, one plane delayed there means it is delayed into another airport, which throws that airport off. It's all extremely coordinated with little slack, which is why issues like this have more-than-local ripple effects.
It's the same for rail systems in the US, but with the caveat that some of them rely on archaic systems... literally, some more than a hundred years old. Here's some NYTimes coverage of that:
