This isn't an "error" per se, but a creative use of public screens. Spotted in Cary, North Carolina, in May 2025.
Unfortunately (or fortunately), the screen was totally wrong. The storm passed us by with not even a drizzle. This suggests that the weather forecasting application was modeling weather to zip code (or larger) regions. It was clear from the radar view of the weather that the storm would pass by our location. An improvement could be to have each of these public screens use their precise geo-coordinates for such alerts. Given that they have video cameras as well, you can use that to identify if it is actually raining at a specific spot and feed that data back to the weather models for refinement. Something worth considering, but likely will never be implemented.
As a result of the weather warning (and corresponding PA announcement), the park we were at cleared out as everyone sought shelter... from a storm that never happened. So much for a happy day at the park.
